How to Train for Hypertrophy: The Science of Building Muscle

Hypertrophy — the technical term for muscle growth — has its own optimal training approach, distinct from pure strength or endurance training. Nail these variables and you'll build muscle as efficiently as possible.

The optimal rep range

Most muscle growth happens in the 6-15 rep range, though a wide range works if you train close to failure. Aim to end sets within 1-3 reps of failure — that proximity to failure is a key growth driver.

Volume is king

Weekly volume (total hard sets per muscle) is the biggest lever for growth. Aim for roughly 10-20 sets per muscle group per week, split across 2 sessions. More isn't always better — recover-able volume is what counts.

Don't forget progression and recovery

  • Apply progressive overload each week
  • Train each muscle ~2x weekly
  • Eat enough protein and a slight surplus
  • Prioritise sleep for recovery
  • Control the eccentric (lowering) phase

The takeaway

Train in the 6-15 rep range close to failure, accumulate 10-20 weekly sets per muscle, progress over time, and recover well. That's the science-backed recipe for hypertrophy.
