How to Build Explosive Power for Sport and Athleticism

Power is the ability to produce force quickly — it's what lets athletes sprint, jump and change direction explosively. Unlike pure strength, power training emphasises speed of movement, and it's trainable at any level.

Use plyometrics

  • Box jumps
  • Broad jumps
  • Jump squats
  • Clap push-ups
  • Bounding and skipping drills

Move light weights fast

Power = force x velocity. Lifting moderate weights with maximal speed (like speed squats or med-ball throws) trains your nervous system to fire explosively. Quality and intent matter more than fatigue here.

Build a strength base first

Power is built on strength. Ensure you have a solid foundation of squats, deadlifts and presses before layering in heavy plyometrics, and keep power sets short and crisp — stop before form or speed degrades.

The takeaway

Combine plyometrics, fast-intent lifting and a solid strength base. Train power when you're fresh, keep reps explosive, and you'll become noticeably faster and more athletic.
